How can I help my friend cope with a break up?

My friend Josh dated this girl for 4 and a half months. I guess they were pretty close, but in most ways they were pretty far apart. I asked his ex girlfriend, who's name is Sophia, about Josh and she said that they couldn't really have a connection.

So anyway, Josh has taken up smoking, and has thought about being self-destructive (cutting and all that stuff). He is really depressed and says that he doesn't feel anything anymore. When I'm with him he never talks anymore. He doesn't make jokes or laugh at any. He used to be a really outgoing person with a great sense of humor, but the break up has turned him into a depressed guy that doesn't feel like doing anything but hurting himself.

How can I help him?How can I help my friend cope with a break up?
smack him upside the head and tell him to grow up...How can I help my friend cope with a break up?
Take him out! Keep his mind occupied and just be comforting and supportive. Sometimes only time can heal a broken heart!
take him 4 a movie or short trip or anythng he likes.
Sounds like he's going through a deppresion which is scientifically unhealthy for anyone. She go up to Sophia and tell her what's wrong with him and she's done to him. Convince her that she has to at least talk to him and maybe that will relieve some of his pain.
see if the grl can help...if not.....ROAD TRIP!! Just the two of you. and dont take no for an anwer.....use that time to tlk and get really deep into the situation.....sometimes time is the healer and sometimes a good long tearful conversation is too
My friend started getting a little depressed and we did not try to cheer her up because we knew that would not help. We told her mom. We loved her and were scared that something bad would happen so we told her mom. If your yougner then 18 then thats a good idea because you probably still live with your parents but if your older 18 maybe just talk to him and tell him to go to the docter because the docter can help or a consulor. Thats what my friend did and she is better. It has only been about 2 months. I hope this helped.

And a new female intrest.
Judging by the 'habits' he is taking up, I'm going to guess that he is in middle or high school. Remind him that cutting or smoking will NOT get her back, or any other girl for that matter. If she's gone then she's gone. You have to let him know that there are other girls/women in the world, and especially ones that will date him longer than 4-5 months!

You personally can't get him to do anything, but you can get him to change his mind. Tell him that sitting around doing nothing will only make him think about her more. He should do things to keep his mind off of her. Get him to throw away anything that reminds him of her.

The breakup hasn't really changed his personality, so all you need to do is keep trying, or just give him time. Get him to go out and do something. Just be a good friend and don't give up on him.

Also, it's bad to use names on the Internet when referring to people's relationships.
