How can I help my friend cope with a break up?

My friend Josh dated this girl for 4 and a half months. I guess they were pretty close, but in most ways they were pretty far apart. I asked his ex girlfriend, who's name is Sophia, about Josh and she said that they couldn't really have a connection.

So anyway, Josh has taken up smoking, and has thought about being self-destructive (cutting and all that stuff). He is really depressed and says that he doesn't feel anything anymore. When I'm with him he never talks anymore. He doesn't make jokes or laugh at any. He used to be a really outgoing person with a great sense of humor, but the break up has turned him into a depressed guy that doesn't feel like doing anything but hurting himself.

How can I help him?How can I help my friend cope with a break up?
Is Josh still young enough to be living with parents? If so, find a way to convince them that he is acting in self-destructive behaviours. You can also alert a counselor at school, but tell someone. Just find someone that will get him the help he really is crying out for. You aren't going to be able to ';change his behaviour'; by yourself. You lack the experience to know what to say and do. but you can be his friend and stick by him. good luck.
